The name of Collegium Musicum Riga has been borrowed from an orchestra that performed in Riga in the 17th century. Both then and now, the musicians are united by their affection towards Baroque music. The existing orchestra was founded in 1990 by Māris Kupčs, who is one of the most determined researchers of Baroque and Classical music in Latvia. He is also involved in the education of young musicians, enthusiastically drawing their attention to the unique magnificence and virtuosity of Baroque music.
2010: Latvian Great Music Award
The orchestra's repertoire consists of Baroque and pre-Classical music performed on period instruments. The orchestra is particularly interested in the restoration and performance of music by 17th- and 18th-century composers from the Duchy of Courland and Riga, including opera performances.
