With its residencies at Musikverein Wien, the Festspielhaus St. Pölten and Grafenegg, the Tonkunstler Orchestra is among the major musical ambassadors for Austria. The main focus of the orchestra’s artistic work is traditional orchestral repertoire, ranging from the classical to the Romantic period through to the 20th century. At the same time, the Tonkunstler consider it a privilege to perform contemporary music. The orchestra currently employs around 100 musicians.
Records

Numerous CD recordings display the orchestra’s artistic profile. These include the Symphony No. 2 «Lobgesang» by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, both conducted by Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada. In 2014, Symphonies No. 1 and 3 by Mendelssohn Bartholdy were released on CD; Symphonies No. 2 and 4 are to follow in 2015. The presentation of the complete recording of all four of Johannes Brahms’ symphonies is scheduled for the spring of 2015. The «Symphonie fantastique» by Hector Berlioz was released on OehmsClassics in 2013, also under the direction of Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Other recording projects include Leonard Bernstein’s «Mass», Joseph Haydn’s Paris Symphonies and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Gustav Mahler’s version, all under the direction of Kristjan Järvi. Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s «Sommernachtstraum», Schumann’s «Manfred», Franz Schmidt’s «Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln» as well as «Desert Music» by Steve Reich and «Zeitstimmung»/«Rough Music» by HK Gruber are also available. The CD «ZEIT:PUNKTE» was released in 2012, featuring three commissioned works.
